Can you believe we are in the final term of the school year? It’s been a wonderful and busy year so far, but we have lots more exciting learning to do this term. We are now looking forward to extending our learning through the concept of ‘COMPETITION’, delivered through ‘Superhero’ activities.

Competition in the early years is not about winning; it is about: Managing emotions, understanding rules, working with others, developing confidence and experiencing success and disappointment with trusted, supportive adults. We will be enjoying superhero stories, talking about the characters and tracking their feelings through the start, middle and end of the story. Earth Day is celebrated on Wednesday 22nd April. We will be behaving like ‘Superheroes’ recognising that “Our Powers” can help “Our Planet”. We will be focusing on friendly competition and exploration of forces, working in teams to complete superhero missions. How exciting!

Below you can see how the concept ‘competition’ supports each one of the five developmental pathways.

Belonging The children will learn to be part of a group, taking turns and respecting other’s efforts.
Communication They will negotiate rules, express feelings and listen to instructions.
Exploration The children will test ideas, solve problems and try new challenges.
Physical Development The children will take part in races, obstacle courses and team games that build coordination, strength and spatial awareness.
Well-being They will develop resilience, confidence and emotional regulation.

Remember that during your child’s early years, developing their independence is essential. It promotes confidence and self-esteem as well as motivation and perseverance in school. Children love to take on responsibilities. Please encourage them to communicate, make choices and carry out some parts of your daily routine. Eventually they’ll be able to carry out tasks by themselves. Start with hand washing, toileting, getting dressed, putting on their shoes and zipping up their coats. Teach them to take care of pets at home. There are lots of other practical things that you can do to help prepare your child for school. If your child is not yet as confident in some of these things then please use this time to practice these important skills.

Home link: Can your child name their main body parts? What different ways can they move around the room? Can they run/jump/skip/hop/roll? Moving to music is a great motivation for the whole family. Enjoy action songs together! There are many number songs and rhymes which are fantastic for developing early counting skills. We are very lucky to have so many places to visit in our local area, maybe you could visit Neath Library to enjoy superhero stories together.

The children will hear and see the words and actions of the Sign of the Cross: “In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” They will join in with our class and school prayers and take part in services and celebrations in Mass.

How can I help to prepare my child for school?

Enjoy singing nursery rhymes together. How many can you learn?

Weekly Reminders

Please provide your child with a drink bottle daily. Fruit can be brought in to school, or school will provide fruit daily for a cost of £1 per week.

Monday: Whole school assembly. £1 fruit money. Forest School afternoon.

Tuesday Infant assembly. PE kits – All full time pupils must bring a kit to school. Kits may be left in school until half term.

Wednesday: Music session with Mrs James (fortnightly).

Thursday: Library session with Mrs Adams. Please return library books by the following Thursday.
